Driver-Fulfilling Free Time

A friend of ours whose drivers are to be current, part of the action, social, and to have exposure to people, paced back and forth on her two-week vacation at a secluded resort in St. Bart’s. She wasn’t ready to chill, and none of the enticements at the resort fulfilled her drivers. She was bored and—because she was bored—she had trouble relaxing.

If you’ve ever been on a vacation that was a disaster, we’re willing to bet the problem was a mismatch between your drivers and your leisure activity. When you have a lot of free time and are doing activities that don’t suit your drivers, you’re going to be bored, or worse. And due to the surplus of free time upon retirement, every day is a vacation day. How will you find fulfillment then?

To answer this question, we focus on your drivers. We believe that driver-fulfilling free time leads to the greatest satisfaction. When you plan your leisure, you need to take your drivers into account. Of course, it’s important to have a balance between driver-fulfilling activities and non-driver-fulfilling activities. Obviously, every activity in your life can’t fulfill a driver. But our research showed the overriding importance of driver fulfillment in retirement satisfaction. And driver fulfillment doesn’t just happen in work. It happens in leisure, too.

How do drivers come into the discussion of leisure? Let’s say the competitive driver is important to you and you decide to fulfill it through sports. Your leisure sport should then have a competitive edge, such as competitive leagues, golf tournaments, contests, and so on. If you are a swimmer, for example, you won’t be happy swimming laps in the pool by yourself, no matter how good the exercise is, because none of your friends are there to compete against—you’re all by yourself. If you are on a team in a senior swimmer’s meet, though, things will be better. Tom, the pre-retiree who is a salesperson, has the competitive driver and fulfills it in his leisure by recording the mileage of his daily runs and comparing it against that of his friends. He will probably continue to do that after he quits working. But will tracking his daily runs be enough to fulfill his competitive driver when he rewires?

TIP

Just because it’s leisure doesn’t make it fulfilling. Think about your drivers when you consider the most fulfilling activities from among the myriad leisure choices available.
